Installing an app

Every app is a Progressive Web App. That means there is no app store, no download, and no account — you open it in a browser and, if you want it on your home screen, you add it there yourself. It then opens full screen like any other app.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the app in Safari. This only works in Safari; Chrome on iOS cannot install web apps.
  2. Tap the Share icon — the square with the arrow coming out of it.
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. Confirm. The app now sits on your home screen and launches without the browser chrome.

On Android

  1. Open the app in Chrome.
  2. Tap the menu.
  3. Choose Install app or Add to Home screen, whichever your version shows.
  4. Confirm.

On desktop

In Chrome or Edge, look for the install icon at the right-hand end of the address bar and click it. If it isn't there, the app still works perfectly as a normal tab — bookmark it and carry on.

Offline use

TIP

Once an app has finished loading once, it keeps working without a connection. You only need to be online for that first load, and for anything that genuinely needs the network.

Installing is also what keeps your data around longest — see Your data for why an app you never open is the one most likely to lose its storage.
